Flat Foot Surgery

Flat feet are a pretty common condition that affects many people worldwide. This condition causes the arch bones in your feet to lie low when you stand upright. Although most people disregard this condition and go as long as their whole lives without undergoing its treatment, for some people, this proves to be impossible.  For the unlucky ones who cannot ignore this condition for long, a flat foot can prove to cause great discomfort and pain and, in some cases, difficulty walking.

In case a flat foot is hindering your everyday activities, it might be time to consider getting treatment. One commonly undertaken option for the treatment of flat feet is surgical reconstruction. Let us look at everything you need to know about this procedure.

What might cause a flat foot?

Although there are ways to treat this condition non-surgically, these are some reasons why you might require surgical treatment. Most of these cannot be treated without surgery which is why it is important to consult a doctor for the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Rheumatoid arthritis of the foot and ankle

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition which causes inflammation in your joints and, in this case, specifically, in the foot and ankle. This condition can sometimes have painful side effects, one of which is a flat foot. This can be treated through surgical treatments such as fusion.

As a result of serious injuries, your joints can lose their proper alignment. Eventually, the ligaments will not be able to support you at all, which will cause the foot arch to collapse completely. In such a scenario, surgeries such as internal fixation might be able to help you heal your foot.

Diabetic collapse

People suffering from a diabetic foot can often suffer from a more severe case of flat foot. Such people do not usually feel any pain. Since this condition can get serious quite quickly, it is difficult to treat it without any surgery. Fusion surgery is one way you can choose to fix this and undergo treatment for a flat foot.

What does it involve?

Flat foot surgery is done after injecting the patient with anaesthesia such that you do not feel any pain during the operation, and even after it, the pain is minimised.

During the surgery, the damaged tendon is removed and replaced with another tendon through the three incisions made in the foot. Other misalignments are also fixed during the same procedure. A metal plate may also be inserted in your foot to finalise the whole thing.

Make sure to talk through the whole process with an expert beforehand such that you know what to expect during and after the surgery. Overall, this process is not painful in the least.

Post-surgical care

Immediately after flat foot surgery, you can expect to feel mild pain and discomfort. Your foot will be placed in plaster so that it remains numb. In case you feel pain, you will also be prescribed painkillers.

The more you elevate your foot, the less swelling there will be. Rehabilitation may also be required of your foot by a professional physiotherapist. Limit how much you walk and move around in general until your physiotherapist or doctor tells you otherwise.

Smoking and taking anti-inflammatory medicines are not advised since that can cause a delay in your recovery.

Therefore, to avoid any complications following flat foot surgery, make sure to follow all the guidelines your doctor recommends you abide by.

Some regular follow-up appointments may also be required. These should be scheduled at regular intervals such that your doctor can keep a close eye on the healing process and suggest changes to your recovery regime as and when required.

How long does it take to recover from flat foot surgery?

Although complete recovery can take as long as a full year, you will gradually start noticing positive changes in the condition of your foot. Until around six weeks after the surgery, it is important that you keep your foot elevated in order to reduce swelling and discomfort or pain. Around 12 weeks, you will be able to wear normal shoes again. Then, slowly but surely your foot will return to its normal and healthy state and you will be able to move around again.

Is this surgery painful?

Since you are given local anaesthesia before the surgery is performed, you should barely feel anything during the surgery. This anaesthesia is registered in such a manner that even the pain after the surgery should not be felt as much. These operations are performed as minimally invasive surgery, so the discomfort should also only be minimal.

Can you run after flat foot surgery?

Once you have had a successful operation for flat foot, it is unlikely that any limitations will be levied on your movements. However, in order to ensure that no further complications occur, make sure that you start doing any sort of strenuous activity only after you are completely recovered. During the recovery process, ensure that you do not put any excessive stress on your foot and limit your movement. Eventually, you can, of course, run. However, it will take some time.

How long does such a surgery take?

The surgery itself should not take more than a few hours. On average, such surgeries should only take around 3-4 hours.

Is physical therapy required after flat foot surgery?

Yes, it is advisable to undergo a rehabilitation process to heal fully after such a surgery. A physical therapist should be able to guide you through the process and help you with certain stretches and exercises as well. A physical rehabilitation process is started 4-9 weeks after the surgery is performed and is continued until you achieve your goals.
